The Stylist's Guide to Satellite Island

I have had a Satellite Island stay jostling for top adventure over the last few years and after some serious friend wrangling sans kids, we headed to this magical place for a long weekend in June.

Surprisingly warmer than Sydney & Melbourne, travelling here is like walking through the wardrobe into Narnia or making you way to Neverland, as you fly to Hobart, drive to Bruny Island, board the car ferry, adventure the length of Bruny and stop for oysters & cheese to meet the boat to alight at the Boathouse of Satellite Island with wooden boat The Pearl anchored and fresh oysters just pried off the rocks waiting in salty water to be shucked.

Once settled, there is no desire to leave & much to explore & uncover.

For our stay (& yours) the entire island is just yours, with bedrooms spread between the Boathouse, canvas tent & house at the top of the stairs with perfect open kitchen, dining & lounge rooms that spills out to the wraparound verandah.

Earlier our shopping had been delivered from the fabulous Hill Street Grocer with all the delicious fare they have on offer. I had my friends pick a meal to cook & ordered accordingly plus some!

We are all enthusiastic cooks and our daily decisions were made around what & where we were to eat.

With the help of the trusty caretaker & jack-of-all-trades, Richard, we moved from verandah, to Boatshed and top of the island for our long lunches with many more options that are to be tried & tested on our next visit.

We circumnavigated the island daily to seek out fossils, press seaweed, admire what was underfoot, gasped at the breathtaking vistas, star gaze and general all round love of the views & sunsets. Each part of the island has something remarkable to offer and the days are bookended with gathering chicken eggs & picking the vegetables & herbs from the kitchen garden. For somewhere that is so close, it could not seem more remote & idyllic. The hardest thing was definitely leaving.

We will all be returning sooner rather than later.

Winter Wonderland in Overland, Tasmania

The overland Track in Tasmania’s Cradle Mountain is one of the most beautifully scenic, nature-immersing hikes you can possibly do. It will reset you into the rhythm and awe of nature. I went in late April when the Tanglefoot Fagus, an endemic deciduous beech endemic to the Tassie highlands  leaves were turning and littered the track like orange & yellow snowflakes.
