TSI x Kara Rosenlund

Last year I reached out to some of my favourite creatives who share a likemindedness to The Society Inc, to borrow their eyes and explore their interpretation of my product range. These fellow aesthetes come from a range of backgrounds & pursuits, from photographers to interior stylists to product designers (some even a mix of all), and I invited them to put their own spin & story into the imagery.

To start the series is photographer & stylist Kara Rosenlund. I came across her work through the magazine world and upon returning to Sydney from New York about the same time Kara returned from several years in London. When someone is so like-minded it is magnetic; despite the distance (she lives in Brisbane) you eventually find these people and I have loved watching & celebrating her journey & work over the years. There’s a wonderful transportive nature to her photography, like you are right there with her as she takes the shot.

I asked her a few questions and she has shared some imagery of her home in Stradbroke Island, featuring the London Drawer Pulls & Seer Hooks.

Where do you live
I live on a small island just off Brisbane in Queensland called North Stradbroke Island. I live here with my husband Tim in an original 1970s A frame house by the sea at Point Lookout.

Profession
I’m a photographer, stylist and author.

Favourite space, room, or place
My favourite place is Adder Rock, on Stradbroke Island. From the house you walk a narrow overgrown track which leads to the sea and up to a rocky outcrop. I love to walk the track and then sit up on the rocks and just be. It’s really calm. The local indigenous Quandamooka people refer to this spot as ‘womens place’.

Favourite season
Living in Queensland we only really have two seasons, hot and hotter. I love autumn. It’s still warm enough to swim throughout the day and then in the early evening have a fire out on the deck and star gaze.

Last book you read, or podcast, or audio book, or mag
I just picked up a copy of Vogue Living Netherlands while in Amsterdam and absolutely love it. I can’t understand a word of Dutch, however the photographs are so emotive and stirring and revealing. The imagery has a real looseness to it and feels personal, that’s probably what most attracts me when it comes to editorial photography.

Most treasured object or heirloom
A stoneware vase of my mothers. It’s not particularly special or valuable, though I remember growing up with it in our family home and now I have it my home and I love seeing it. I usually cut a single stem of banksia and place it in it.

Favourite scent in your house
In spring when jasmine travels on the air and wafts through the doors and windows into the house.

Music you listen to at home
Music is always on and I love making playlists. Currently there is a mix of Nick Drake, George Harrison, Mazzy Star and Nina Simone.

What do you want for your birthday
A day of no plans and to be with my family, eating local seafood on the beach in a teepee made from sun bleached drift wood.

Favourite movie
I adore Out of Africa, the fashion, interiors and the landscape. I can watch it over and over again, I never get tired of watching that film.

Winter Wonderland in Overland, Tasmania

The overland Track in Tasmania’s Cradle Mountain is one of the most beautifully scenic, nature-immersing hikes you can possibly do. It will reset you into the rhythm and awe of nature. I went in late April when the Tanglefoot Fagus, an endemic deciduous beech endemic to the Tassie highlands  leaves were turning and littered the track like orange & yellow snowflakes.
