LOCATION: 27 The Corso, Manly NSW 2095
Leaving no trace of its previous Chinese-themed incarnation, The Pines emerged as a social hangout: part surfclub, part lodge. I wanted to create a relaxed environment to lounge around in, where there is an indication of ping pong tables, surfboards & every other water related toy stashed nearby & the stories of the daycan be exchanged over a game & a drink.
A colour palette of ‘Monarch’ orange, ‘Siren’s Song’ light blue, ‘Oceania’ dark blue and ‘Bunting’ red are from my own The Society inc. paint range. We panelled walls in rough sawn Oregon, wainscotting & shingles to create a warm atmosphere with replicated natural seagrass flooring. I designed chopping board-topped high tables and zinc-topped tables to have layering of materials, all created by my trusty carpenter & blacksmith. Sailcloth partitions were custom made & then threaded with true boating chandlery between the indoor pergolas and wicker shades throughout.
The pergola structure offered an opportunity for fairy lights & a bit of green with plants hanging in coloured Canadian maple syrup buckets. Props of flippers, oars, ping pong bats, a skimboard and boats I sourced from Byron Bay, Melbourne, Sydney & further afar. Handpainted oil portraits sit proudly on the walls, taken from the surfclub archives. Chalky Moroccan tiles line the bar with a hand tinkered zinc top lit by my bespoke ‘pirate patch’ cage lights.
Grace Garrett handtouched upholstery fabric in tomato & midnight fabrics are the feature on the oversized lounges mixed in with some cane shapes & plenty of stool options.
I repeated a tartan handpainted pattern, oversized on the dancefloor that appears again in the WC panels. Lots of fun signwriting throughout and a revisit to string art with Ahoy & an anchor which deck the walls after being inspired by a very clever young artist from Byron Bay, Hunter. I had spied an old wooden Manly Junior out at a friend’s warehouse some time ago, which could not have found a more perfect spot in the stairwell – thanks Gary & Sam.
As a teen I frequented North Steyne every single weekend, where the boys surfed in their faded oakanuis and we lay about under the giant pines that line the beach. Hence the name of the new Level 2 at The Ivanhoe, The Pines. Enjoy.
