Why Choose Brass?

Brass is a core feature & focus of The Society Inc.'s brand ethos and iconic style. Brass is an excellent choice choice for any interior. Not only is it a sturdy and long-lasting material, but is earth conscious & timeless in its visual appeal.

Unlike some other materials that may corrode or rust, brass hardware maintains its integrity even in humid or damp environments, making it suitable for bathrooms and kitchens. And we believe that brass becomes all the more beautiful with age as it naturally patinas.

The beauty of forging brass pieces is that they are both economical for you and the planet. Brass is able to be reused and re-purposed as part of a closed loop cycle, which we emulate in our practices at The Society Inc. Brass is a sustainable material as it is composed of copper and zinc, both of which are abundant natural resources. Additionally, brass can be recycled over & over again, without losing its inherent properties, making it a sustainable choice.
We hold a variety of pieces made from solid brass; brackets, drawer pulls & curtain rods just to name a few.

Heritage & Sustainability

The Society inc hardware & selection of home goods are manufactured in India, a very intentional choice. This is a country where master craftsmanship and everyday handmade trades have never been forgotten or lost. The uninterrupted craft lineage and approach to resource recovery are deeply embedded in the culture. We’re proud to work with artisans in this vibrant country where heritage trades still observe long-held values around sustainability. With the belief that no parts should be wasted, precious metals and other scraps have not been carelessly lost in landfills, but instead are valued, recovered, reheated, reused and reworked.

Old objects are disassembled to be made into something new. These principles of reusing stable materials like brass over and over have been practised for centuries in India.  Moradabad, The City of Brass, is where many of The Society Inc. products are cast, smithed, forged, braided and tooled. Reclaimed metals are poured, hot & smelting, into chalked pressed metal tins filled with muddied sand for casting.

It’s a reminder of the strong foundations built on craft. Technical nutrients like metals and alloys don’t break down like their modern eco-consumer compostable counterparts. But they are strong, malleable & adaptable. With the right consideration, we hope to explore how they can become infinitely recyclable.

Care & Longevity

Aside from the sustainability factors, one of the primary reasons why brass hardware stands out is its durability. Our brass products are raw or aged and protected with a satin gloss lacquer and are suitable to be used in wet & humid environments. Designed to be well used & well loved much like an heirloom. Unlike some other metals that may wear down with constant use, brass can withstand the test of time, making it a reliable investment for your home.

When it comes to hardware, durability is paramount. Brass is an excellent choice because it is a sturdy and long-lasting material. It can withstand the test of time and daily wear and tear. Unlike some other materials that may corrode or rust, brass hardware maintains its integrity even in humid or damp environments, making it suitable for bathrooms and kitchens. And we believe that brass becomes all the more beautiful with age as it naturally patinas.

Solid brass requires minimal maintenance, making it ideal for busy households. Brass naturally develops a patina over time, which adds to its charm and character. However, if you prefer the shiny, polished look, brass is easy to clean and restore to its original brilliance.
Did you know that boiled linseed oil is one of the best ways to polish your brass pieces?
Boiled Linseed oil is an affordable, non-toxic & non-damaging product that can easily restore & rejuvenate brass hardware. Although the natural patina of products is a process we admire, sometimes pieces need a little brightening. Linseed oil is an excellent ingredient to make brass objects shine: just rub the oil with a cloth on the brass to be polished. The oil will not only polish the object but also create a protective patina. It also allows for your products to have a longer life cycle, eliminating the need to buy new

Versatility

As we believe that brass compliments every finish and style, We love to mix and match brass with other finishes and materials. Such as cane and leather wrappings. Explore our range inspired by  mid-century designer Carl Auböck.
It can also be paired with other materials, such as wood, glass, or marble. If you have a kitchen with Chrome fittings, Brass can be an excellent way to improve the visual interest of your interior.

Woolooma Glass House

If it wasn’t for the call of a lyrebird, the property might never have existed...

Late last year I made my way to the Upper Hunter Valley of NSW, around 6 hours from Sydney, where Woolooma Glass House lies. With my travel companions Silver and her little bestie - Maisy. Built in 1973 by Sydney-based architect John Suttor, this stunning property is owned by the White family, who have a deep-rooted connection to the land that spans generations.
