The Reef Knot Story

Did you know about the rich history behind the reef knot?

Its simplicity, strength, and adaptability have ensured its endurance through the ages, reminding us that even the simplest of knots can weave a complex and enduring narrative in the fabric of history.

Sibella's long-held connection to Nautical Motifs

Sibella grew up on the water in Middle Harbour, enjoying a childhood filled with runabout boats, fishing, swimming, and plenty of nature. Her love of the sea is reflected in her interior styling and product ranges, with the majority of her library named after seafaring objects, histories, and stories. Sibella's admiration of knot tying, heritage crafts, and trades is evident in the Reef Knot, one of the product ranges in collaboration with her blacksmith, Saul.

A little bit about the History of the Reef Knot

The Reef Knot, also known as the square knot or the Hercules knot, traces back centuries & finds its origins in maritime and practical applications.

Believed to have been used by sailors as early as ancient Egypt, this knot's simple yet effective design made it an essential tool for securing sails, rigging, and other nautical tasks. While it might appear as just a simple method of joining two ropes together, the history of the reef knot is interwoven with the evolution of maritime practices, technological advancements, and everyday applications that have spanned centuries.

Its primary appeal lay in its simplicity; it could be tied and untied quickly, an essential quality for sailors dealing with ever-changing weather conditions and the dynamic nature of the sea.

The reef knot's ability to hold tightly under tension, yet still be easily undone when needed, made it an invaluable tool. During the era of tall ships and intricate rigging, the knot's reliability was tested as it played a pivotal role in keeping vessels afloat and functioning in the treacherous waters of the high seas.

Summer Stay at The Salty Dog

Summer Stay at The Salty Dog

This year, my dear friend and photographer; William Meppem and I captured the essence of this perfect boathouse, located in Newport, Sydney. The ideal spot to drop your anchor this holiday season.

I have dreamt of a boathouse escape for many years and all of my dreams have come true in a recent visit to a space that captures it all, The Salty Dog. This miniature house provides all of the nuances of boat building within its own minute space. Situated amongst the quintessential Sydney landscape of emerald green water and unique sandstone structures - surrounded by angophora gums.

With the extension of the dinghy & direct entrance to the water, this house evolves into an explorative landscape that extends beyond its petite footprint. If I were to create the ideal boathouse... This would be it.
