Earlier this year, we popped down to Tasmania to visit Lumière Lodge, a beautifully restored late 19th century townhouse (and Airbnb) in the foothills of West Hobart, to create a design disturbance with The Society inc’s latest range of hardware & homewares. Read on to find out a little about how it went...
A loving restoration full of gorgeous moments big and small, from great lighting circuits to thoughtfully chosen linen and towels. The anaglypta wallpaper in the attic bedroom where I spent two nights was my favourite. Even weeks later I’m still puzzling how the tub and sofa got up the petite original staircase.

The lounge room is a dark, moody space with gorgeous Caravaggio light, while the oversized kitchen is the perfect place to sit and chat in front of the fire, enjoying the local produce, from whisky to bread to preserves.
The owners of Lumiere Lodge, Samuel and Kerran Langley are born and bred Tasmanians, and they have a lifetime worth of recommendations in the area. Here’s what they say:
Lark Distillery in Pontville for its rich convict history, stories and barreled elixirs!
&
Agrarian Kitchen and Eatery (and accompanying New Norfolk Historical site)
The walk from the Lumière to the top of kunanyi/Mt Wellington. One moment you are amongst the bustling Hobart streets and, in less than a quarter of a day, you’re in beautiful rugged alpine country shaped by the wild westerly winds and temperature extremes.
Below the fern glades and myrtle trees is the dry eucalypt lowland forest of nearby Knocklofty Reserve. It’s a quiet but often unforgiving place - summiting through alpine country and scrambling over tree roots, you walk through oscillating orographic clouds with the odd echo of bird song. The beautiful muted colours of the vegetation contrast with the pinks, purples and reds of the mountain berries, and dolerite rock is laden with brightly coloured lichen and moss. The mystique of this area, and reminded of its stories of people and place.

catch the Mona ferry from Brooke St Pier, have a tipple at the Void Bar, then walk around observing the weird and wacky exhibits.
Catch the last ferry back for the day, before a tipple and snacks at Institut Polaire or Mary Mary Bar.

Autumn and Winter are irresistible because of their changing light and the beautiful mood reflected through the house, plus the flurry of leaves passing the windows. Come prepared for rain, hail or shine! The little island can deliver all four seasons in one day, so bring a warm coat, sensible footwear, and a hat.
