Lavender Bay Residence

Photography by Chris Court

Over the last couple of years I have had the honour of working with architects, Durbach Block Jaggers on this incredible home in Sydney. Our insightful clients had the idea to team up me (the maximalist) with Neil & the DBJ team (the minimalists) and we had a cracking time. The result was featured in Vogue Living’s ‘Australian Made’ Issue May/June 2021 with my brother Chris Court’s photography.

Under the theme of Australian made we make special mention to some of my esteemed Australian collaborators & suppliers who have helped me to realise the interiors of this project. The glowing naked porcelain pendant which was placed above the kitchen island was made by Melbourne based studio Porcelain Bear. A kinetic hand crafted brass light shifts & turns like an orbiting constellation above the dining area & was designed & made in Australia with my blacksmith Saul of Colo Forge. We used fine sculptural jewellery, organic flora & a dusting of hand tinkered magic to inspire the petal forms of this piece. We sourced classic vintage pieces from the fabulous Ken Neale to relax the strong artistic sensibility of the classic Egg chairs that sit proud by the fireplace. A generous & soft panelled bed was hand crafted by brilliant joiner J.West & positioned to soak in the world class Sydney Harbour view.

The motif of Australian made frames a silver lining on the turbulent year that was 2020. The pandemic has given us a huge appreciation for the local makers & businesses that have shone luminously & resiliently through this turbulent time.

The overland Track in Tasmania’s Cradle Mountain is one of the most beautifully scenic, nature-immersing hikes you can possibly do. It will reset you into the rhythm and awe of nature. I went in late April when the Tanglefoot Fagus, an endemic deciduous beech endemic to the Tassie highlands  leaves were turning and littered the track like orange & yellow snowflakes.
