Hotel Palisade | Henry Deane

LOCATION: 35 Bettington St, Millers Point, Sydney 2000

Photography by Chris Court & Anson Smart

As you reach the top levels of 4 and 5 to Henry Deane, a lounge bar you experience my take on present day Australia with newly renovated areas and 360 views offering the most glorious scenes that Sydney has to offer.  Every surface is hand touched.

You enter the lobby with hand printed marble wallpaper, antler chandelier, salvaged wooden doors and catch glimpses of the indigo dyed bar capped with a hand smithed brass curve. The classic cubic tiles dictate the fourth floor with views of the sunset which can be watched from the bespoke curved leather banquette. Two private rooms, The Linnean & The Push Room, bookend the Eastern side with inky blue interiors & uber comfy lounge furniture with a private balcony – These are glamorous rooms filled with unique finds offering an ‘settle-in-for-the day/evening’ experience like no other. Don’t miss the marble bathroom & handpainted paper – a jewel box experience in its self.  The walls are hung with Australian contemporary artworks including celebrated artist, Paul Ryan’s Blue Boy who watches gallantly over the space.

Whereas Level 4 is inky & rich as you ascend the steel clad staircase, you reach the top of the world – all airy, bright & magical. Floaty hand dipped curtains blow in the breeze, as waiters glide around pink leather sofas & handprinted leather DJ box with cocktails & oysters. We built a  curved glass panelled kitchen that meets the porcelain & leather fronted bar that flanks the Southern wall. The salvaged hardwood floor is a nod to the areas industrial past lit by custom brass cap shades. Everything in this space is custom-made & handtouched by many talented artists, makers, painters, tinkerers, drapers, creatives, builders, smiths, signwriters, wrights, potters, tanners, glaziers, electricians & pickers who I coerced , wrangled & talked into making things in record time.

Hotel Palisade sits proudly on the hill, a beacon protecting the shores, a historical landmark that has been brought back to life with its next chapter ready to be written.

Winter Wonderland in Overland, Tasmania

The overland Track in Tasmania’s Cradle Mountain is one of the most beautifully scenic, nature-immersing hikes you can possibly do. It will reset you into the rhythm and awe of nature. I went in late April when the Tanglefoot Fagus, an endemic deciduous beech endemic to the Tassie highlands  leaves were turning and littered the track like orange & yellow snowflakes.
