Inspiration

Words by Sibella Court

You know you have arrived at Manka’s Inverness Lodge when you spot the Air stream on Argyle Road, which acts as the reception and check-in. I was met by Joanne and shown down the hill on the bayside to where I would be staying; a two storey boat house with lichen covered walls & stairs sits amongst the perfect backdrop of Tomales Bay, complete with timber finger piers that point out into the bay. The shoreline is sparsely littered with converted dwellings that were once boat building sheds and fishing huts and a still active yacht club.
I can’t help but feel that this place was made for me. Rough sawn white painted rooms decked with timber floors are propped with old fishing nets, masts, sails and canvas buckets, as if you have stepped aboard an old vessel from an era gone by. Settling on the top floor of the 1880s boathouse I was presented with an elevated vista of the ever-changing bay, best viewed from the cosy confines of the feathery & dreamy bed in the bay window. The rooms are accented with cane wrapped drawers, chairs and floor lamps creating many a spot to settle in with a good book or watercolours should the weather turn. When I was there in late November the mood shifted from wet & windy to sunny & hot all within a week.
The boathouse bathroom is large and fitted out with all my favourite old fashioned Breakfast At Tiffany’s kind of fixings – a porcelain sink with the perfect taps, old school flush toilet, footed bath, armed mirrors and vintage-style towel racks all topped off with hardware from a lost time.

Winter Wonderland in Overland, Tasmania

The overland Track in Tasmania’s Cradle Mountain is one of the most beautifully scenic, nature-immersing hikes you can possibly do. It will reset you into the rhythm and awe of nature. I went in late April when the Tanglefoot Fagus, an endemic deciduous beech endemic to the Tassie highlands  leaves were turning and littered the track like orange & yellow snowflakes.
