Restoration Australia | Holowiliena

Written by Sibella Court

In 1852 a Scottish blacksmith, his wife, and six children, all walked 500km from Adelaide, South Australia, to start a new life. Their great-great-granddaughter seeks to restore her pioneering ancestor's original buildings.

Established in 1853 by the Warwick family, Holowiliena is the only remaining pastoral property in Australia still owned by the original family. It would take me a full day's travel to arrive a Holowiliena station - a flight to Adelaide, a small aircraft to Port Alfred then a 3-4 hour drive into the Flinders Ranges. This is a spectacular part of the world and still very much frontier country. It can be very, very dry but whilst I visited over 2 years Frances, Luke, Stella & Tod saw wild flowers! The first time they had shown their pretty faces in Frances' adult life.

Summer Stay at The Salty Dog

Summer Stay at The Salty Dog

This year, my dear friend and photographer; William Meppem and I captured the essence of this perfect boathouse, located in Newport, Sydney. The ideal spot to drop your anchor this holiday season.

I have dreamt of a boathouse escape for many years and all of my dreams have come true in a recent visit to a space that captures it all, The Salty Dog. This miniature house provides all of the nuances of boat building within its own minute space. Situated amongst the quintessential Sydney landscape of emerald green water and unique sandstone structures - surrounded by angophora gums.

With the extension of the dinghy & direct entrance to the water, this house evolves into an explorative landscape that extends beyond its petite footprint. If I were to create the ideal boathouse... This would be it.
