The Atlantic | Byron Bay

The Atlantic is a beautiful property in Byron Bay, consisting of four buildings in walkable distance to the serene beaches that surround it.

Recently, my dear friends Kim Amos & Stephen Eakin reopened their beach side hotel, The Atlantic.

Kim has rebuilt and redesigned each and every building, even the gardens have been completely landscaped - every detail considered. The communal kitchens, outdoor loungerooms, as well as adding a central pool which has retained its original essence of this wonderful location in the heart of byron bay. Everything you know and love, but better.

An Interview with Kim from The Atlantic

Tell us your names and describe where you live

Set the scene for us, not just how it looks, but how does it smell, how does it feel, how does it sound?

Kimberly Amos, Stephen Eakin and our 3 sons that come and go from Melbourne,NYC and California.

We live in the sun bleached surf house next door to our business The Atlantic Byron Bay. Our home is full of artworks by family and friends, It’s always in a state of casual chaos with surfboards, fins, goggles, wet towels and other ocean accessories laying randomly around the place. You can hear the sound of the ocean through the nature reserve and there is always a crew of sun kissed young surfers coming and going.

What brought you to this part of the world?

We took a year off living in Sydney in 2004 to renovate an old cottage here in Byron Bay and have our third son. A year turned into 18 years and here we still are.

What can you tell us about the history of the property?

The Atlantic was a backpackers when Stephen found it. It was the place where the bands from The Beach Hotel used to stay (and trash) back in the day. It took a lot of convincing to get me on board and 10 days after we settled it flooded !! There we were holding a newborn baby with 2 young boys and wondering what the hell we had done. Each winter we’d renovate a little more of the property and slowly created a place we would like to stay at if we were visiting the bay.

What do you love most about life in Northern NSW?

There is an abundance of beauty here in the Northern Rivers.. It’s not just the stunning beaches and surf breaks. The hinterland, bush walks, creative communities…. The Rivers are the true beauties though. You can paddle for days and discover inlets, bird life and pockets of pure magic and feel like you are the only person on earth.

How do you source wares, produce, locally-made items, etc. for the property?

We are blessed with some of the most innovative craftspeople and makers in our community. I Dont need to travel far to find everything I need to curate a desired space at The Atlantic and it’s particularly enriching to create a story with friends like Pampa, Jatana Interiors, Society Inc and artist Emma Gale

If you had to run out the door of The Atlantic and may not be able to return, what object would you take with you and why?

Other than people and pets of course! Size and weight are no object! The painting of Georgia O’Keeffe by our son Hunter Amos. I never tire of looking at this painting.

Tell us more about the design intent behind The Atlantic's recent renovations.

The 2022 flood really hit us hard. We had planned to raise the front office house but were suddenly forced to consider the rest of the property to mitigate the impact of it happening again so we embarked on an overhaul that took close to a year. We raised everything! Floors were tiled with a limestone that resembled sand, and ground levels throughout were raised with winding timber pathways leading to a new 12 x 5m magnesium resort pool. Palms and lush gardens were planted outside guest rooms to create a sense of calm and tranquillity. We wanted our guests to return and feel as though it had always been that way.

What would be your ideal way to spend the day as a guest at The Atlantic?

I’d walk straight down to the beach and swim no matter what time of year. Breakfast at Bayleaf, swing by The Book Room and grab a novel to lounge by the pool with. Grab one of our McTavish boards for a wave at The Pass or take a bike out to the Byron Industrial Estate. Dinner at Light Years and a herbal tea on the deck.
