The Story of The London & Pimlico

The Story of The London & Pimlico

Every one of my designs, whether it’s a piece of hardware or an interior space, has a story behind it that shaped its form and imbued it with character. Here’s the origin story of two of my favourite hardware designs, the London and the Pimlico.

Interview with Sibella Court

“I could find no better way to spending an early  weekend morning rifling through old things whether it’s at a brocante, car boot sale or flea market" - SC. Even the smallest of pre-loved objects can lend a charm, a sense of nostalgia that instantly enriches a space and home with story.

TSI x Tess Newman-Morris

Tess Newman-Morris first appeared on my radar many moons ago, during her days as the visual merchandiser at Seed and she would often buy from my early incarnation of The Society inc store in Paddington. She had such a beautiful eye for detail and I had the lovely opportunity to work with her in 2012 on my book Gypsy, shooting the bulk of the photography at Establishment studios. It was such fun!

Tess went on to work with Kate Alstergren to create the look of Satellite Island, which feels as though it was made just for me - I’m sure everyone feels like that, and that’s what makes it so special. Tess’ style is steeped in nostalgia, patina, texture & detail, all of which speak to me so very clearly. See her take on The Society Inc product and Q&A below.

TSI x Kim Ficaro

Last year I reached out to some of my favourite creatives who share a likemindedness to The Society Inc, to borrow their eyes and explore their interpretation of my product range. These fellow aesthetes come from a range of backgrounds & pursuits, from photographers to interior stylists to product designers, and I invited them to put their own spin & story into the imagery.

Next up is Kim Ficaro, a dear friend who assisted me during my time in NYC and has become a clever stylist, author and product designer with her range Totem Home. She has a wonderful eye and I knew whatever I sent her she would work her magic on! See her take on The Society Inc product and Q&A below.

Sarah Glover is the most wonderful blend of adventurer & cook, and spends her time traveling Australia to incredible outdoor settings where she creates feasts over open campfires. She recently renovated a shack by the sea in Tasmanian, which became home to several pieces from my hardware range. We are kindred spirits, with a shared love of handcrafted rafts & driftwood forts flying a pirate flag, dreaming of sailing the imaginary seas! See her Q&A below.

To start the series is photographer & stylist Kara Rosenlund. I came across her work through the magazine world and upon returning to Sydney from New York about the same time Kara returned from several years in London. When someone is so like-minded it is magnetic; despite the distance (she lives in Brisbane) you eventually find these people and I have loved watching & celebrating her journey & work over the years. There’s a wonderful transportive nature to her photography, like you are right there with her as she takes the shot.

I can't remember the exact first meeting with Kim, but knew that what she was creating at The Atlantic was magnetic and it was inevitable that we would connect. Our early days of friendship were invitations to her Making nights at a studio in the Byron Bay industrial estate with a trusty group of friends. Each catch up would centre around a different project she had imagined up, I would spend the night chatting and having a nice time, so much so that I would leave the class empty handed but full to the brim.

Ditte has one of the most beautiful eyes for capturing magic and detail in her photography. Our times living in New York crossed over and I had the luck to work with her many times on some amazing editorial shoots.

This week I look through the eyes of Sarah Andrews, innkeeper of her gorgeous stay Captains Rest, stylist & teacher at The Hosting masterclass. We are very much of the same ilk, with a nomadic spirit, a shared love of curated stays and a good dose of seafaring paraphernalia. I was fortunate enough to stay at Captains Rest which you can read about here, and look forward to returning there one day
