Indigo textiles have origins rooted in the ancient times of many Asian countries, in particular Japan and also Africa, as indigo dyes from the flower of several species of plant were one of the easiest to source and most inexpensive natural colourings available. I collect and treasure antique, handcrafted fabrics from all over the world, indigo included. I love to consider the many ways in which it was used: panels stitched together to make trousseau sheets, artist smocks, table linen or throws for beds or lounges. This collection of hand-dyed textiles comes from the West Gulf of Africa from Togo to Ghana. Each is beautiful in its own right and has the marks of age that tell a story of a life lived.
DIMENSIONS | 148 x 109cm
