Material Palette | Using Leather on Your Cupboards & Doors
Like many of the materials which are incorporated into our products, leather patinas beautifully. We use raw unsealed leather which is soft to the touch & carries a nude blush tone for the first few weeks. The more the leather is handled the darker it becomes, eventually taking on a beautifully worn-in tan colour reminiscent of functional & durable leather wrapped handles often seen hanging in craftsmen's workshops.
Whether you have solid oak, v-groove mouldings or mudroom cabinets painted in a chalky oyster grey it's hard to imagine leather looking astray. Dressing kitchen, laundry or bedroom cabinet drawers or doors with a leather wrapped hand tinkered drawer pull or handle adds an instant sense of warmth. The tactility it brings also makes you feel comfortable & part of the evolution of the object & space. The oil on your hands & exposure to sunlight is what will accelerate the patina on your handles.
Changing out existing handles or hardware for something more special is also a lovely & cost effective way to give a space an update & refresh. It's quite surprising how different a plain white door can look with a coat of Boro 2 & a leather wrapped handle such as our Falconer Handle. If you have a limited budget updating your drawers or doors with a well considered paint colour & set of new hardware can have a transformative effect. If you're in the planning phase of a new build or renovation, incorporating leather into your hardware selections as feature pieces can play an integral role in layering alongside more simplified metal fixtures & finishes. This could be a leather wrapped pull on a set of bifold doors above your deadlock or a braided kitchen rack on your kitchen or laundry splashback for hanging utensils, s-hooks or scissors such us our Papier Scissors.
