Yardstick
One of my key pieces of advice for stylists (or any creative person) is that you can’t be afraid to wear many hats. In any one week, a stylist can be a builder, artist, upholsterer, framer, cook, seamstress, narrator, calligrapher, carpenter, photographer’s assistant – even model. Every new shoot I do sends me down the path of a new field of expertise. That’s why it’s good to have on hand lots of practical tools that will mean you’re always ready to tackle the next problem. That’s why I love a ruler – they’re very helpful, but they also have an aesthetic that harks back to a bygone era. Like so many of the things I love, vintage rulers carry with them the hallmarks of being relied upon by others before me. The older the ruler, the greater sense of history.
