Teapot

Tea seems to have been accepted as the universal symbol for comfort. By this reasoning, the teapot then is an essential item for every home. While it may not garner the praise it's due for being the ever-reliable piece of kitchenalia, the vast and varied incarnations of teapot design sometimes let it standout for aesthetic reasons. Sure, there have been some beyond-kitsch takes on the teapot but, leaving those aside, you only have to consider the exquisite pieces that are made in Japan to value the sculptural form of the teapot. And, if you have the chance (and love tea), find time to be a part of a traditional Japanese tea ceremony to witness the art of this tradition. I'm definitely a purist when it comes to the teapot, the simpler, the better. The lovely curve of the spout is the perfect finishing touch to the simple silhouette. Vintage teapots are pieces I keep an eye out for, not only for the time-worn tones and designs, but because I imagine how many cups of tea were made in the pot and how many stories, smiles and spontaneous laughs occurred around the teapot. They're special that way.
