Oilcloth

Oh Mexico – the vibrancy, the sensory overload and the feeling that you never know what's around the corner. Perhaps my material choice does not encapsulate these values, but I truly love Mexican oilcloth. While it is at its core a practical, lo-fi material that I do love to lean on come summer alfresco dining season, the many patterns and colours available speak to the thrill of a Mexican fiesta a little better. When I visited Mexico, which no doubt is still true, there's a wonderful merging of indoor/outdoor spaces as if the divide doesn't exist. Reams of oilcloth in designs and palettes you can only dream of are everywhere, and you can't help but feel that you're bringing a bit of Frida Kahlo to the family barbecue. I love that this humble material offers so much, and that it brings the spirit of fun to the everyday.
