Nickel

I can't guarantee that there's a nickel in the pictured stack of coins, but I chose this material as a walk down memory lane to my time living in New York City. A pocket full of nickels might not have even included this actual material, as these days the material has been replaced for cheaper alternatives. I do know that when I was living in New York a pocket full of nickels might get you a glass of icy-cold fresh lemonade at the market or even a hot pretzel from food truck, and to feel a couple of nickels jangling around in my pocket might mean that I could pick up a tiny treasure at a flea market or even a length of ribbon. But the material itself can be traced back to as early as 3,500BC. I love the way that something derived from the earth can take on a totally new meaning based on a bigger picture. I also love the way a material that takes on economic value can then represent something as simple as a refreshing drink on a hot day. A humble material can bring with it a world of possibilities...
