Suminagashi | The Art of Japanese Marbling

When it came to designing my soon-to-be-released book IMAGINARIUM, one of the first things on the creative check list was marbled endpapers. I have long admired the beautiful swirls and patterns found in old tomes, it's a hark back to the beginnings of the book in the 17th century when European makers adopted Middle Eastern marbling techniques to create colourful covers to contain their pages. I rolled up my sleeves to try my hand at the Japanese marbling technique of suminagashi, and you will find the end results within the cover of IMAGINARIUM. Watch my process in the video below.
