Object History: Zeolites

Nature is a continual source of inspiration for me, be it plant, animal or mineral.  One of the highlights of my Scottish travels was visiting Jupiter Artland, the home of Anya Gallaccio’s magical installation “The Light Pours Out Of Me”; a deep grotto embedded in the garden surrounded by walls encrusted with amethyst of the most beautiful purple hues.

Zeolites are naturally occurring crystalline structures that come in many varieties of form and colour. They possess the unusual property of emitting steam when boiled, as discovered by a Swedish mineralogist in the 18th century, leading to the creation of their name – ‘zeo’ being Greek for ‘to boil’ and ‘lithos’ for stone.

I find zeolites to be a great addition to styling an open shelf or tablescape and a simple way to add a bit of mineral flair. If they appeal to your inner mineralogist, we have small zeolites and large zeolites available in store. Take a lucky dip – each one has its own character, structure and colouring!
