This is the working museum of the designer Achille Castiglioni
, his brothers & team in Milan. They are known for many product designs, most famously the classic 1962 Arco lamp. The museum is made up of four first floor light-filled rooms that wrap around in a L-shape. We start in the conference room, with a large table positioned on an angle, and surrounded with objects not enclosed behind glass but available to touch, inspire & admire. The table has many different chairs, a simple enamel sink is attached to the wall and papers & books are in random organised chaos. Achille liked everyday objects, simple mechanism & collaboration. He would ask his team for four solutions to a design, and draw inspiration from his many collected objects that are accessible & on view throughout the space.
The drawing/designing room is very organised with drafting drawers, wooden measuring tools and walls lined with simple brown boxes with numbers stencilled on their spine. Each job has a number & within each box: each catalogue, drawing and job reference is then stamped with that job number & catalogued for ease of finding & returning. The stamps are pegged within an alcove under some shelves.
The hallway wall is lined with fine cork and pinned with inspiration & objects. Between the two large windows are thin shelves to place finishes (ie. tiles, stone, colour swatches) so you can see them together as a story – genius. The next room is a storage room of sorts: job drawings & papers are wrapped in brown paper & stickered with job reference & stacked high to the ceiling. Plans are rolled into tubes & job numbers are stenciled on their caps in shelves that hang above the doorway. Weighted lights hang everywhere so they can be adjusted depending on the core. Although the studio is packed with stuff, there is plenty of scope & room for imagination & design. This place feels somewhat similar to how we work at The Society inc.
