I became enamoured with the bright, kaleidoscopic and somewhat chaotic colours one finds in the rich textile history of central Asia through my mother, who specialised in Islamic textiles from this region. Together we explored Uzbekistan visiting master dyers and weavers in Fergana Valley who created the most beautiful ikats and suzanis, and along the way began collecting a library of vibrant textiles to use as references for colour combinations and designs.
I have a particular fondness for ikats with their bold patterns and vibrant colours, which emerge from yarn that is pre-dyed before being woven. As a source of inspiration for my interiors (have a read through the Travellers & Magicians chapter in Etcetera), ikats transport me to the buzzing bazaars in faraway lands, travelling the merchants’ routes along the old Silk Road and traders selling their wares of velvet jackets, embroidered suzanis and magnificent ikat jackets.
The Society inc is now home to six varieties for silk ikats sold by the metre, so you can bring home a little bit of textile magic to transform into a cushion, a ruched lampshade or simply to drape over a chair for one to admire!
Shop the ikats online under the [Textile] category or come visit in store at The Society inc Warehouse 3.02/75 Mary St, St Peters NSW 2044.
