From the Library: Sonia Delaunay

Bound in colour and full to the brim of written insight, this book titled simply Sonia Delaunay was published by the Tate & holds an important place in my library.

Delaunay was a female revolutionary & a leader of the 'Orphism' movement, and strong colour & bold shapes were the ingredients to her images of pure & harmonious abstraction. She spent most of her artistic life in the creative nucleus that was Paris in the 20th century, alongside her husband Robert Delaunay and other intelligent and challenging bohemians.

This book is a timeline of her artistic development and influence from her paintings, to fabric & clothing to interior decoration. It’s a book punctuated by beautiful old photographs & archival documents amongst exciting type and revealing quotes.

“Everything is feeling, everything is real. Colour brings me joy.” As it does for me. I love to encourage people to embrace colour & not to shy away from its impact. If anyone will convince you of colour’s power it is Sonia Delaunay.
