I am slowly growing a botanical specimen garden which I will one day begin to harvest to extract essences to create my own fragrance. As I continue to foster my specimen garden and gathering knowledge, I have developed a fascination for native Australian scented plants especially as I learn about the wonderful properties they possess.
Australian botanical specimens were collected on James Cook’s voyage on the Endeavour to be catalogued and illustrated by artists on returning to the UK. An incredible 30,000 plant specimens were collected over the duration of the Endeavour’s Pacific voyage. Sydney Parkinson, the artist who accompanied Cook, worked off these specimens to illustrate around 1,300 drawings and paintings. Struggling to keep up with the pace of discoveries, Parkinson had to sketch and leave a brief colour indication before the plants wilted to later be completed in watercolours by botanical artists Frederick Polydore Nodder and Frederick Miller. These illustrations of such scientific & historical worth can now be found at London’s Natural History Museum.
Embracing my inner botanical explorer & watercolour artist I set out to investigate the plants that Indigenous Australians have understood for thousands of years, and find that endota spa has tapped into the natural benefits of Lilly pilly, Lemon aspen and Davidson plum in their Organics range. Whilst their fragrance is a journey within itself, these native ingredients also offer nourishing, moisturising & rejuvenating properties to the skin.
Lilly pilly | a berry sourced from native tropical rainforests in north-eastern and south-eastern Queensland and north-eastern New South Wales, the fruit is packed with potent antioxidants and minerals that refresh, nourish & protect.
Lemon aspen | also a rainforest tree endemic to Queensland, the lemon aspen comes from the Rutaceae family, similar to citrus and willows. It usually grows in upland and mountain rain forest and is an important characteristic of rain forest regrowth. The fruit is antioxidant rich and much sought after by the fruit-eating pigeons of the wet tropics.
Davidson plum | a beautifully coloured fruit of dark blue and purple skin contrasted with pink on the inside, found in riverine, high rainfall rainforests of south-eastern Queensland and north-eastern New South Wales. A prized bush food, the plums grow on the trunk of the tree and its fruit acids, vitamins and antioxidants are used as an anti-ageing & regenerating agent.
