The Society inc. team & I were long overdue for a school excursion! I’ve been totally MIA on the install for Mr Wong and we all needed to get out of the office/construction site. Just our luck, we caught the ferry to Cockatoo Island in our big coats on a perfectly crisp & blue winters day. We lasted about five minutes on the deck before we moved inside and made the most of the sun through the windows.
Our excuse was the Biennale but we had the ulterior motive of checking it out as a shoot location. I was swept away by the textures and different scale offerings of the buildings, so many opportunities! When it came to the art & installations, the whole thing was a must-see but I did have my favourites (including the cool pop-up bar!):
- The installation of reeded grass & paper that looked like petals. It was a collaboration between a polish artist and an Aboriginal group of artists & papermakers.
- The beautiful video of boats on the Ganges.
- I loved the rooms in Theatre of Speaking Objects. The study without the walls and the semicircle of old curtains with the theatre chairs were the best.
- Of course, my top pick was the natural sculpture: a seagull’s nest on the ground in a doorway. So simple, so beautiful.
