As my most recent travel guide to feature in the April issue of Belle Magazine is New York, I thought I would share one hot spot I never miss when I find myself back in NYC - John Derian.
A mix of beautiful textiles both new & vintage, oddities, breathtaking lighting and John Derian’s very own range of decoupage & furniture sits amongst many other treasures & trinkets, housed in the John Derian store and John Derian Dry Goods which is the next door down. This is a stylist’s dreamscape of the wonderful & curious waiting to make a house a home.
John has a wholesale business that makes awesome decoupage (think dresser trays for cufflinks and loose change that read "I must insist that you return my trinkets") and numbered paperweights. But the most intriguing part is the collection of oddities he cleverly uncovers at flea markets and other secret places; paper hats, flashcards, shells, entomological prints, papier-mâché vegetables, Moroccan ottomans in bright colours, lanterns, handblown glass tumblers, lamps with clamps...
John Derian also hosts a wall covered in Hugo Guinness paintings & linocuts, which inspired me to bring back a bit of Hugo Guinness fun to The Society inc. These whimsical linocuts are printed with India ink by hand on fine Italian paper in Hugo's Brooklyn studio (to view the range of prints we have available, have a look under the Art & Object shop category).
If you are as enthralled by John & his world as much as I am you can purchase his beautiful new book, Picture, or see his house in The Inspired Home | Nests of Creatives by Kim Ficaro, Todd Nickey & Ditte Isager.
