Satellite Island

As I delved back through these photos that span a decade of visits to the magic of Satellite Island, I find I have a deep sense of belonging to this petite land mass that sits just off Bruny island in the  D'Entrecasteaux Channel of Tasmania

Like a siren's song, the magnetic pull of Satellite Island is real, as the stories of my adventures on the island are woven into the tapestry of my memories and entwined with the happiest & freeing of times. Here you can ‘dance like no one is watching,  love like you've never been hurt; sing like no one is listening, and live like it's heaven on earth.’

Over these years my visits have spanned the seasons, and each time is as beautiful as the last and remarkably different. Tasmania, as many of you may know, does not have the most predictable of seasons (i.e can snow mid summer) and the island has its own microclimate on top of that. So if you can secure a spot, do not hesitate or if not, come armchair travelling with me!
Upon the lead-up to your visit, you will receive clear concise instructions of how to organise your food & beverages, allowing you & your crew to order everything that you desire prior to your stay, so the wine is chilled & the fridge is fully stocked with your purchases upon arrival.

The magical tentacles that welcome you upon arrival, whether by sea plane or boat, set the stage for an experience that is nothing short of incredible. Richard, the island guardian extraordinaire & head enhancer of experience, greets you via boat and the journey begins. His efforts transcend mere caretaking; they shape an experience where the island becomes not just a destination but a part of your own holiday nostalgia.

People have often asked, ‘what I do on a small island for 5 nights’?

Well my first trip did start with 3 and I realised then that just was not long enough.

As it is self-catering, Cooking becomes a rhythmic part of the island's heartbeat, a familiar pulse that sets the tone for the days ahead. Then the activities are endless and each time I leave thinking I could have done more things. Not to say a cracking pace is set, time is fluid there, set to the rhythm of sun.

Here’s a list of some of the many things I may do or have done on the island: painting, shucking oysters off the rock shelf, fossil hunting, adventuring at different times over the island, lunch settings in various spots, bonfires, dancing, watching the moon rise & the sun set, rambling, swimming, , pilates, seaweed pressing, building a pirates hut from driftwood (stayed up for  a few years!!), paintmaking from earth & seashore finds, botanical specimen collecting, photographing, romping, birdwatching, paddleboarding, rpwing The Pearl, outdoor hot tub soaking, long lunches, stargazing, dolphin interacting, foraging & general mucking about.

The island reflects the essence of its custodians, Kate and Will. Dear friends now, their hospitality is not just a service but a personal invitation to their island with an understated luxury that is embedded in the thoughtfulness and everything at hand If there’s something you want to do, explore or create, Kate & Will’s intuitive approach to hospitality will provide it.

As I stand on the precipice of another journey to Satellite Island, I realise it's not just a holiday stay. It's a haven. With every visit, I become a part of this island, and it becomes a part of me, a magical home that transforms those who visit it.

Winter Wonderland in Overland, Tasmania

The overland Track in Tasmania’s Cradle Mountain is one of the most beautifully scenic, nature-immersing hikes you can possibly do. It will reset you into the rhythm and awe of nature. I went in late April when the Tanglefoot Fagus, an endemic deciduous beech endemic to the Tassie highlands  leaves were turning and littered the track like orange & yellow snowflakes.
