Wallpaper
There are so many possibilities with wallpaper – so many textures and patterns to choose from – not just for covering a whole room or a feature wall but a creative addition when loosely erected with pins as freeform art (and when your styling mood changes, you can just take it down and use it for something else).

Winged: dragonflies, butterflies and cicadas
I can’t remember when my fascination with things that fly began, but perhaps it was when my dad introduced my brothers & me to all the summer cicadas, and the different noises they make. We would wait for the season to start and the cicadas to emerge from the ground.
At some point, my dad also had a stint at catching & pinning butterflies – I loved his boxed collection. One of my top five list of things to see is the migration of the Monarch butterflies when they amass on the Californian coast in Big Sur on the way south.
I remember the first time I visited Deyrolle in Paris on Rue du Bac, a most wonderful shop that is truly a Cabinet of Curiosities. The smell, the greeting at the top of the stairs by a polar bear – or was it a grizzly bear, or a lion?
I bought a beautiful collection of butterflies and a rhino bug at the NYC Pier Antiques Show. Years later, when I was getting them restored by my now good friend, Jessica Grindstaff at Evolution’s entomological department, I found out that they were original Deyrolle pieces, much to my delight.
Nothing is more magical than the American Museum of Natural History butterfly conservatory, a stroll of fancy through a room of live, beautiful butterflies. One year, I had just finished a Jo Malone shoot and was covered in one of her moisturisers. As I wandered through the live exhibit, Paper Kites, attracted to the scents, landed on my shoulders and stayed the duration of my visit. Now that’s magic.
If you can’t get your hands on the real thing, buy wrapping paper and carefully cut out butterflies, pin to a board with entomological pins, label as desired.

Words
I collect words. I write them down, joust as people might tear a page from a magazine, to inspire me at a later time or to use in my interiors as artistic embellishment – scribbled on a chalkboard, painted on a wall, mounted in a frame. Incorporating a quote or the words of a favourite poem or song into your interior instantly personalises the space. Use a paint pen or, if you’d rather something less permanent, a pencil. Don’t fret about mistakes and imperfections – it’s these that make this kind of decoration uniquely yours.
