Shield
The pirate in me is drawn to the swashbuckling notion of the shield. Did you know that a small (light) metal shield called a buckler could easily by worn on the belt of a soldier, and eventually lead to the use of the term swashbuckler? I love this idea of an object becoming a symbol of protection that you can have with you at all times. The shield also reminds me of my old school crest that I used to wear on my uniform, along with all the other kids at school. Together, we were part of a community of like-minded and curious people - another reason I love the shield symbol. It's for this reason that I apply the symbol liberally to my world. You'll find this symbol dotted throughout my life as though it's a comma, punctuating my spaces and my possessions. That lovely unique shape lends itself to being used for lots of things, whether it be a finishing touch to an object, as on my Tailors Pin, or making up the silhouette of the object itself, as with my Shield Mirror. My affection for the shield is most clear when you consider that it's the emblem of the The Society Inc. Visit my warehouse and you'll be greeted by my metal shield and barn doors bearing the emblem proudly. When I think about it, perhaps the shield is less of a comma and more of an exclamation mark.
