It's hard to deny the draw of gathering together friends and family over a shared meal, and perhaps a little bit of wine for good measure. Dining together is one of life's simplest pleasures, and is all the better when there's no sense of over-wrought pretension. For me, I like a big rustic meal on a sturdy table. I do like to have a bit of fun with the table decorations but, as with the meal, I'm all for rustic and imperfect settings. That's why I love the simplicity of a white plate. As a food lover, an empty plate holds a feeling of excitement for the meal to come and, when you keep the look of it simple, the food itself will be the star. This is at the heart of the design for my 1856 Dinner plate (pictured). The simple embellishment is just enough to bring texture to your table, without overpowering your lunch. As food trends come and go, you see all sorts of weird and wonderful variations on the way your meal is served and, while I'm all for imaginative uses for everyday objects, I can't go past the humble plate as my preferred choice.
