Ikat textiles
Perhaps today's post talks more about a technique, rather than an object. But this technique is worthy of reflection. Ikat refers to a yarn-dying technique. While many other fabrics will be dyed once the piece is wove, ikat is different in that the yarn is dyed first and then woven into the striking patterns. While the finished product can showcase a slightly blurred pattern, this is not because of a mistake at the hand of the weaver. In fact, this blurry look is only achieved when a weaver has totally mastered their technique. I love that you might think, at first glance, that the aesthetic of the fabric was not a honed craft, but this assumption would be totally wrong. Sometimes styling is a bit like that, too. You might strive to have certain pieces arranged in a seemingly random formation - a hard skill to master.
Like all textiles, my fascination for ikat was driven by my wonderful mother, Dee, and her thirst for knowledge on all things yarn, woven and painstakingly handcrafted. Having a beautiful selection of ikat available in store is a bright reminder of her, and a lovely thing to see every morning.
