Yarn
We had to skip over the materials instalment of 'X is for'. A limited selection of options takes us straight to Y this week. Yarn can be used to create textiles, ropes and embroidery and, seeing as I love all of these things, it's no surprise that it features on my materials list. It's hard to know just how far back yarn finds its early days, but it's sure to be one of the earliest materials that took mankind into the future. Yarn creation started as a process of using your hands to fuse fibres together and this saw progress with the advent of spindles around 5000BC. Then we look to the dying and see early colours very close to nature, with plant dyes being the norm, right through the the full spectrum of technicolour synthetic dyes we have today. A common theme in my materials alphabet is how one humble element holds such promise and potential, and yarn is no different. A simple thread can become an exquisite jacket or lash a rope – there's so much this material can offer.
