Umber
Let's look to the foundations of human history and the earliest stories known to mankind. If we turn our attention to the cave paintings of the past, we'll see today's material in use. Umber is a form of ochre that was one of the first pigments ever used. Its name derives from Umbria, the region in Italy were the earth is rich with iron, giving this earth its striking tone. Umber pigments can vary in darkness depending on the level of iron present. As a colour hunter, I'm often looking at tones in all their forms, which is what drew me to this material. I love the sense of history that can be traced through many artistic movements – even when the Impressionists decided umber was not their style. I'm no artist, but it leaves a good impression on me.
